Navigation and layout

A clear navigation structure is paramount not just for search engines but for the ease of your visitors finding information. Depending on what type of site you have or what kind of traffic you are trying to attract try some of these navigation tips and watch your bounce rate fall.

  • Keep navigation simple! (and near the top of your page) Make it easy for your visitor
  • Include navigation in the footer
  • Use a breadcrumbs menu on every page
  • Include a search box
  • Don't have too many menus!
  • Not too deep! Usually no more than three levels deep
  • Make links in you content - great for SEO

Remember - white space is your friend. Don't be afraid to let your content breathe and avoid cluttering up your page.

This is particular true when it comes to typography. Font, font size and colour and more importantly legibility are essential as is good organisation. Label sections, use bullet lists and keep paragraphs short and to the point. You need to offer your visitors easy access to your great content and entice them to take a closer look.
Try and maintain consistency and a flow throughout your site from page to page with how you use and position elements, layout, colours and fonts. This familiarity helps your visitor feel comfortable in their ability to move around in and explore your site.
